is scene near Calistoga looking North to Mt. St. Helena. The ridge of
hills the the left with redwoods in profile is the location of the
Sterling winery. I removed the white winery buildings because I very much
prefer this view of the nature of the valley without white buildings.

This is
scene deep in a redwood grove on Avenue of the Giants in Northern
California.
This painting was on exhibit at the Oakland Museum
in an exhibition called "The Art of Seeing".

We were out touring the Valley in September
after the crush and after the tourists had left. There was an amazing warm
yellow light late in the day. I painted this a few weeks later to try to
catch that feeling of the bright yellow/orange vines and the warm
afternoon of the Napa Valley on a September afternoon. |

This is just off highway
29 near Calistoga late in the day with long shadows and the intense green
of the vines as light can be seen through the leaves. Mt St. Helena is in
the distance. This is a study of light and depth where greens change to
blues with distance. |

This is about the beauty
of the vines and fruit late in the season - almost ready. The fruit is
full of sugar and the grapes are nearly spherical with juice. And down
under the protective canopy are the cabernet grapes with a blue color
dusted with white. They are very sweet just before harvest. The juice is
red as the wine will be later. What amazing wine will come from these
simple grapes. |

second floor of the Opus One Winery. This was an October afternoon - warm,
clear, with high clouds and vine and tree leaves almost ready to fall.
This was at the maximum color of the Valley - almost an eastern fall
season look for the Napa Valley. |

light just grazing the mountains in the the west.

in Napa Valley, on a vineyard, for a number of years. I often walked or
drove through the vineyards in the early mornings and evenings.
This scene is
Napa Valley in the morning. Mornings are a very special time and hard to
describe.

When
Morning Fills the Sky

- This
is a scene on Avenue of the Giants near Richardson Grove - a place I
visited often as a child with my parents. On some summer days, remnants of
a storm can mix with fog and the combination of intense clouds illuminated
by river light is amazing. The name of this picture is taken from and old Christian
Hymn. My grandmother visited this area as young girl in the1890s.
This picture was on exhibit in a St. Mary's College landscape show in Moraga
in June of 2003.

- This
is a large and well known campground on the Eel River at the Avenue of the
Giants. It is a place where I camped with my parents and I place where I
camp now when I can. It is a fishing place and a place to be on the water among
the redwoods.
This picture has an emphasis on
the water and the serenity of quiet water but with the beauty of the
redwoods always present. The smells of the area are a mix of fresh river
water and deep forest - the light is costal - a grand place to be! |
