Inverness

This is a new painting of the Inverness area north of San Francisco. This view is from Inverness looking across Tamales Bay. The time is late afternoon and the evening fog is moving in from the ocean as the sun is setting. This is a beautiful area and often dramatic at this time of day when long shadows, fog and sunlight interact.

This is oil on board and is 12" x 24".

Point Reyes

This is a view of the Point Reyes National Seashore area North of San Francisco. This is also a scene late in the day as the sun sets behind the viewer and the fog roles in across the fields and low hills getting thicker and thicker as night falls.

This is an area of large dairy ranches some still allowed to continue within the park area.

This is an oil on board 16" x 20".

Salmon Creek Beach

This is an area of Northern California called North Salmon Creek Beach. This painting is not quite complete. I am still adjusting the colors and contrasts. That cliff was a lot more difficult than I expected. But then each painting has it surprises. The complication is in the balance. I did not want the cliffs to be dominant over the water. I am trying for a balance of earth, sea, and sky as well as a balance of color and distance.

This is oil on board and is 16" x 20".

Ferns of the Forest Floor

This is a scene I have wanted to paint for many years. It is a scene of the forest floor of a redwood forest. So often we walk through a redwood forest looking up at the magnificent redwoods sometimes 300 feet tall.

But we forget to enjoy the total life in such a place. As a person spends time in this world, they realize the trees are only a small part of the life of a forest. I wanted to share some of the beauty of the floor of the forest and its amazing variety of life.

This is oil on board and is 28" x 36".

Bodega Church

I have been working on this for some time. It has been a project separate from my mainstream art. It has an almost an abstract feeling about it depicting contrast and intensity more than reality.  This is the kind of painting for which each person can interpret their private meanings.

There is more work to do to complete this painting but I hope to finish it soon!

This is oil on board 20" x 16"

Point Reyes Sunset

This is another painting out of my mainstream of art.

Ocean sunsets are always beautiful but very difficult to paint. It is easy enough to splash lots of oranges and reds and grays on a canvas but to really capture the feeling of the moment and the image of the sun setting is another matter. All sunsets border on "corny" and some, if not most, are over the top. I avoided sunsets for years and finally painted one just to see what happens.

I often look at this one, which hangs in our home, and it takes me back to that moment when I saw this amazing scene and maybe that is all that matters!

I am hoping others who view this painting might enjoy this scene also.
